FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Q: Why do I need a fire suppression system?
A: Fire suppression systems are to be placed and used in establishments when fire sprinklers would be inadequate or harmful. Kitchens should have suppression systems due to the high amount of grease. If the fire suppression system is activated, nozzles discharge a fire suppressant chemical to combat grease fire. Fire sprinklers alone could cause more damage and be potentially dangerous as a fire suppressant chemical for kitchen equipment. The use of a fire suppression system is more likely to prevent property damage and even worse, injury or death to people in your facility. It's also worth mentioning that in the event of a fire, most insurance companies are unlikely to pay for any damages if you are operating with improper fire safety equipment OR if your systems are not being inspected/maintained regularly and consistently by certified and licensed technicians. Contact us today and we can help you determine which fire suppression system would suit your business best.
Q: What is an inspection for the fire suppression system?
A: The NFPA guidelines state that commercial hood fire suppression systems should have an inspection twice a year. During the inspection one of our certified technicians will examine all appliances and ductwork, clean all nozzles to ensure they are not clogged and verify protective caps are in place, verify/replace detection links, inspect piping, and much more. By having the inspection every 6 months and replacing components when necessary, you ensure that your system will work properly to detect and suppress fire. Regularly completed inspections can often reduce the potential for service calls which can sometimes cause your establishment to temporarily close. You will receive a copy of your inspection report at the time of service to keep for records. Contact us to get your semi-annual inspection scheduled!
Q: The temperature in my kitchen is much warmer than usual and the hood is making a lot of noise. Is this normal?
A: This is most likely a sign that your exhaust fan needs attention and maintenance. Contact us today to have a certified technician come to your establishment for a service call.
Q: Does Alacran Hoods complete installation/repairs for food trucks/trailers or only restaurants?

Q: If my business doesn't have a kitchen, but it has a fire extinguisher, do I still need to have it checked by a certified technician?
A: Per the NFPA, extinguishers need to have an external maintenance examination conducted on a yearly basis, at the time of hydrostatic test, or when indicated by an inspection discrepancy. This yearly maintenance examination must be conducted by a certified technician. It's important to note the NFPA requires extinguishers be inspected when initially installed and at least once a month after to make sure they are reliable and effective. Most establishments delegate monthly extinguisher checks as an employees duty. Contact us today for your fire extinguisher needs! We can provide you with the extinguishers necessary for your type of business.
Q: I'm looking to expand my kitchen. How do I know if I need a bigger hood or different equipment to protect my business and maintain regulations?
A: If you are rearranging or expanding your kitchen setup it's mandatory to have a licensed professional evaluate that all of your appliances would have the correct nozzles and would be positioned for proper protection. In the event that the nozzles for a kitchen fire suppression system are tripped, the nozzles discharge a fire suppressant chemical designed to combat grease fires which makes it crucial to have the correct nozzles in place! Some cities require permits when piping and nozzles are being adjusted and equipment is being rearranged or replaced. We work closely with local authorities to ensure your systems meet all required regulations. Don't take any risks with your safety - trust us to help you with your project and get the permits you need.
Q: Will I need a permit to have a kitchen hood and/or fire suppression system installed?
It is a standard requirement to have a permit from the city and sometimes the county (depending where your business is located) for installation of commercial kitchen hoods and fire suppression systems. The permit process for your commercial kitchen hood or fire suppression system can be overwhelming, but that's where we come in. Alacran Hoods can assist you in getting all the necessary permits for your hood and fire suppression system to ensure that all requirements are met. We are committed to following all regulations set forth by the fire marshal.
Q: How often does my hood need to be cleaned?
A: Depending on the frequency of use, typically most hoods are cleaned every 6 months. If your commercial hood gets heavy use, it may be beneficial to have it cleaned every 3 months instead. Failure to complete routine cleanings allows grease buildup to occur which causes the hood to work poorly and allows for an increased risk of a fire. The grease build up can also effect the air quality of the workplace and quality of the food being served. Along with fire suppression system inspections, routine hood cleanings are required to maintain code regulations by the fire marshal. Contact us today to get a quote for your hood cleaning.
